Canberra has intensified its pressure on Tehran by imposing a fresh round of sanctions on Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced measures targeting 20 individuals and three entities, specifically focusing on senior officials and financial networks associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

This move reinforces the Australian government’s previous designation of the IRGC as a state sponsor of terrorism, bringing the total number of sanctioned Iranian targets to over 200.

The decision aligns with a broader Western strategy, following similar recent actions by the US Treasury and the European Union. Tensions remain high, particularly after the EU designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization—a move that prompted Tehran to retaliate by labeling European armies as terrorist groups. These diplomatic escalations occur against the backdrop of ongoing unrest within Iran and the government’s crackdown on protesters.
