US issues new Iran-related sanctions

The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced a significant new round of sanctions targeting Iranian officials, financial networks, and corrupt elites.

Government Officials Eskandar Momeni Kalagari, Iran’s Interior Minister, has been sanctioned for his alleged responsibility in the deaths of thousands of protestors.

Babak Morteza Zanjani, an Iranian investor, was designated for previously embezzling billions of dollars in oil revenues intended for the Iranian people.

In a historic first, OFAC designated two digital asset (crypto) exchanges linked to Zanjani. These exchanges are accused of processing large volumes of funds for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that these actions were ordered by President Donald Trump. Bessent strongly criticized the Iranian regime, accusing them of: Squandering oil revenue on nuclear weapons, missiles, and terrorist proxies rather than building a prosperous nation. Acting “like rats on a sinking ship” by frantically wiring stolen funds to foreign banks. Attempting to exploit digital assets to evade sanctions and finance cybercrime. Bessent vowed that the Treasury would continue to target networks that enrich themselves at the expense of the Iranian citizens.
