The European Union has imposed a new round of sanctions on five unnamed individuals connected to Russia’s military-industrial complex following recent Russian airstrikes on Ukraine.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the August 7th decision, stating that Russia’s inability to advance on the battlefield has led Moscow to escalate its attacks against civilians. She emphasized that every new attack is a reason for Europe to increase its pressure, which must continue until the war ends.

This recent move comes just over two weeks after the EU adopted its massive 21st sanctions package on July 23. That package added 48 individuals and 170 entities to the sanctions list—the largest single addition since the full-scale invasion began.

The extensive July package targeted Russia’s financial, energy, and military sectors, as well as cryptocurrency networks, companies supplying the war economy, and the “shadow fleet” used to bypass oil restrictions. It specifically sanctioned 56 entities in the military sector, with a heavy focus on the production and supply chain of long-range drones.

The broader 21st package was only finalized after Greece secured an annually renewable exemption, which allows Greek companies to continue transporting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to non-EU clients.
