The German government is reportedly preparing to officially blame Russia and roll out comprehensive countermeasures following an attempted drone attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig-Halle Airport.

According to reports from Welt am Sonntag and Politico citing government sources, Berlin intends to introduce both direct national measures and coordinated European Union sanctions. The response—internally dubbed “Zeitenwende 2.0” (Turning Point 2.0)—is expected to go far beyond symbolic actions like expelling Russian diplomats or shutting down Berlin’s Russian House cultural center.

The move stems from an incident on August 4, when an explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was discovered near a Ukrainian transport plane at the Leipzig airport; US intelligence later assessed the device as bearing distinct hallmarks of Russian military intelligence. While Berlin has neither confirmed nor denied the reports, an official announcement was anticipated to align with the EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting held early this week in Ireland.
